Client: Bowling Club, Sydney
Project: Bowling Green Lighting Upgrade
Location: Sydney, NSW
Date: February, 2025
Objective: Replace ageing 1 kW metal-halide floodlights with energy efficient 500W Arena Module LED Flood Lights to improve night visibility, reduce energy consumption, and meet Australian sports lighting standards.
Background
The Bowling Club operates several greens used for social and competitive lawn-bowls events throughout the year.
The club’s previous lighting system relied on high-pressure 1 kW metal halide fittings that had become unreliable and costly to maintain. Light levels were inconsistent, with noticeable dark zones affecting evening matches and televised events.
The club wanted to:
- Upgrade to LED technology providing bright, even illumination
- Reduce running and maintenance costs
- Improve visibility for players and spectators
- Comply with AS/NZS 2560.2.8 – Sports Lighting for Outdoor Bowls
Solution
Following a detailed site inspection and lighting simulation, LED EXPO Australia recommended and supplied 8 × 500 W Arena Module LED Flood Lights.
Each luminaire delivers more than 80 000 lumens with precision-engineered beam control to provide smooth, uniform coverage across the entire green without glare or light spill into surrounding areas.
System Features:
- IP66-rated aluminium body for long-term outdoor reliability
- High-efficiency LEDs (> 160 lm/W) and low glare optics
- Mean Well driver for stable, flicker-free output
- Adjustable bracket mount for fine aiming
- 5-year warranty and 100 000 hour design life
Installation was completed in just one week with minimal disruption to evening play. Existing poles and wiring were reused after electrical testing and reinforcement.

Results
Lighting Performance:
Average horizontal illuminance increased from 120 lux to over 250 lux, meeting recommended competition-level standards for club bowls. Light distribution is now uniform across the green, eliminating dark corners and shadowing.
Energy Efficiency:
Each 500W Arena Module LED Flood Light replaced a 1,000W metal halide, cutting total power usage by roughly 50% while delivering higher brightness and better colour rendering.
Maintenance Savings:
No more lamp or ballast replacements, LEDs provide consistent output year after year.
Community Feedback:
Players immediately noticed the crisp, even light and reduced glare, making it easier to follow the bowl’s path during evening sessions.
Sustainability:
The upgrade reduces annual electricity consumption by over 7MWh, supporting the club’s commitment to sustainable operations and cost control.
